Researchers found 60% of years of potential life lost were in the 20-49yo age group while about 15% of years lost were in those of age 65yo and above additionally 80% of deaths prevented by alcohol were among senior citizens. We have been warned to stay off alcohol for various harmful effects e.g. pancreatitis, breast cancer and liver diseases but the main problem is that percentage of deaths related/due to alcohol occur before the age of 50'and this vividly shows that people who lived to age 50 and presently drinks are survivors.

Researchers found that when it came to alcohol related deaths from conditions such as liver disease, pancreatitis and stroke, age played a major role which means nearly 36% of deaths caused by alcohol consumption were in people between 20yo-49yo but deaths prevented by alcohol amongst senior citizens are at 80% and this is due to the beneficial effects that alcohol has especially in cardiovascular diseases and gallstones.

MODERATION MATTERS

Older people are more likely to see health benefits of moderate consumption of alcohol and moderation means not having to drink more than one glass of wine daily for men and women above 65yo.and benefits may include reduced risk of heart and possibly the risk of diabetes and stroke.
